Refuge Nature Photography Club Exhibit

Members of the refuge’s photography clubs photographs will be on display in the auditorium at the Visitor Center during October 2010 during regular business hours.

Beginning Bird Watching Driving Tour—Saturday, October 9 at 9 am Join a volunteer for a driving tour in the Refuge van to learn how to identify a variety of birds. Call 321-861-5601 reservations

National Wildlife Refuge Week Family Festival—Saturday, October 16 from 9 am—3 pm. Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week on Saturday, October 16 at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge from 9 am to 3 pm. This free annual event celebrates the Refuge System's pivotal role in offering visitors outdoor recreational opportunities as well as showcasing the conservation and recovery of wildlife species on Refuges across the country. Programs will include children’s activities and crafts, face painting, free giveaways, guided nature tours, Native Plant Society Plant Sale, reptile and raptor live animal exhibit, live music, and a rain barrel workshop. All programs and activities are free except for the Rain Barrel Workshop. Refreshments will be sold by the Merritt Island Wildlife Association. Plant Photo Presentation & Driving Tour—Saturday, October 23 at 9 am Watch a photo presentation followed by a driving tour to learn how to identify the many species of plants found on the refuge. All About Manatees -Saturday, October 23 at 1 pm. Learn all about manatees with Refuge Volunteers during a photo presentation and hands on manatee artifacts and a f trip to the Manatee Observation Deck.. Call 321-861-5601 reservations.

Refuge Photography Club -Thursday, October 28 at 6 pm

Professional Photographer Robert Amoruso will be the speaker for the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Photography Club meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 28th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. His workshop will focus specifically on bird photography, exposure, and composition. Thursday’s workshop is free and all are welcome to attend. Part two of the workshop will be Sunday, October 31st from 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Robert will lead a photography field trip around the Refuge. The cost Sunday’s workshop is $35 per person. What is this fungus Among Us? Saturday, October 30 at 1 pm Join Dr. Jay Barnhart, an “Avid Amateur Mycologist” at Merritt Island National Wildlife for a visual presentation. Learn about Mushroom Facts, Fables, Folklore and Fun in this narrated interactive program. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations. Nature Reading & Craft Program for Kids- Creepy Crawlies- Saturday, October 30 at 2:30 pm. Children ages 5 and older accompanied by an adult are welcome to participate. Children will listen to a nature story, make a craft and join in other activities. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations.
