January 2011 Refuge Events-Members & Public Welcome

Beginning Bird Tours Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays & Sundays at 9 am except 1/1, 1/27, 1/29 & 1/30 . A Fee of $3.00 per person, MIWA Members and children under age 16 are free. Cash preferred. Join a Refuge volunteer for a guided three hour driving tour in the Refuge van to learn how to identify many species of birds. Call 321-861-5601 reservations.

Eagle Watch Along Black Point Drive—Wednesdays from 2 pm- 4 pm and on & Saturdays, 1/8, 1/15, & 1/22, A Refuge volunteer will be stationed along Black Point Wildlife Drive between Signs 11 & 12. A spotting scope will be available for viewing the eagle’s nest. Reservations are NOT required, just drive to the site at Black Point Drive.

Cruickshank Trail Hike—(5 mile loop)- Wednesday, January 26 at 9 am. Take a hike with a refuge volunteer. Meet at Refuge Visitor Center. Bring sunscreen, water, insect repellant &snack. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations.

All About Alligators—Saturday, 1/22 at 2 pm. Learn all about alligators through a photo presentation and hands on alligator artifacts. Call 321-861-5601 reservations.

Florida Panther Program—Tuesday, 1/18 at 1 pm. Learn about the endangered Florida Panther through a photo presentation. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations.

Roseate Spoonbills Presentation- Thursday, January 13 at 1 pm. Learn about the natural history of the beautiful and unusual bird through a photo presentation. Call 321-861-5601 for information and to make reservations.

All About Manatees–Saturdays, 1/15 at 11 am and 1/22 at 1 pm. Learn all about manatees with Refuge Volunteers during a photo presentation and hands on manatee artifacts.

Plant Photo Presentation & Driving Tour—Saturday, January 15 at 1 pm. Watch a photo presentation followed by a driving tour to learn to identify plants found. Bring water, snack and insect repellant. Call 321-861-5601 for information & reservations.

Butterfly Survey– Sunday, 1/16 at 1pm—Volunteers and refuge staff will participate in a survey to identify butterflies in several habitats for the Butterfly Monitoring Network. No experience necessary. Bring water, snack & insect repellant. Call 321-861-5601.

Scrub Ridge Trail Hike—Wed, 1/19 at 10 am—Take a hike along a 1 mile loop in scrub habitat with a refuge volunteer. Bring water, snack & insect repellant. Call 321-861-5601.

Waterfowl Hunt– Hunting occurs in most areas of the Refuge from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 12 pm on Wed., Sat, Sun. & Holidays. Hunting is prohibited on Black Point Drive. See “2010-2011” Hunting Regulations for more information.
