February 2011 Refuge Programs-MIWA Members & Public Welcome

Beginning Bird Tours Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays & Sundays at 9 am except 2/12 & 2/24. A fee of $3.00 per person, MIWA Members & children under age 16 are free. Cash preferred. Join a Refuge volunteer for a guided three hour driving tour in the Refuge van to learn how to identify many species of birds. Call 321-861-5601 reservations.

Eagle Watch Along Black Point Drive—All Feb. Wednesdays, 2 pm - 4 pm & Wednesdays, from 10 am to 12 pm except 2/2 & all Saturdays 2 pm—4 pm. A Refuge volunteer will be stationed along Black Point Wildlife Drive between Signs 11 & 12. A spotting scope will be available for viewing the eagle’s nest. Reservations are NOT required, just drive to the site.

Manatees for Kids—Nature reading and Craft Program—Saturday, 2/6 at 1 pm. Children ages 5 & older accompanied by an adult. Children will listen to a nature story & make a craft. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations.

Cruickshank Trail Hike—(5 mile loop)- Wednesdays, 2/9 & 2/23 at 9 am. Take a hike with a refuge volunteer. Meet at Refuge Visitor Center. Bring sunscreen, water, insect repellant &snack. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations. All About Manatees–Wednesday. 2/9 at 2 pm and Saturday, 2/19 at 1 pm. Learn all about manatees with Refuge Volunteers during a photo presentation and hands on manatee artifacts.

Florida Scrub Jay Festival—Saturday, 2/12, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Main event will be at Sendler Education Outpost Pavilion on State Road 3. Music, exhibitors, guided tour, children’s activities. See flyer for details.

Florida Panther Program—Tuesdays, 2/15 & 2/22 at 11 am and Saturdays, 2/19 & 2/26 at 11 am. Learn about the endangered Florida Panther through a photo presentation. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations.

Shorebird Program & Tour—Sunday, 2/13 at 1 pm- View a photo presentation, followed by a driving tour. Call 321-861-5601.

Oak Hammock Trail Hike—Wednesday. 2/16 at 10 am. Join a refuge volunteer for a guided 1 mile hike through hammock habitat. Call 321-861-5601 for reservations.

All About Alligators—Wednesday, February 16 at 2 pm. Learn all about alligators through a photo presentation and hands on alligator artifacts. Call 321-861-5601 reservations

Roseate Spoonbills Presentation- Thursday, 2/17 at 1 pm. Learn about the natural history of the beautiful and unusual bird through a photo presentation. Call 321-861-5601 for information and to make reservations.

Butterfly Survey– Sunday, 2/20 at 1 pm—Volunteers and refuge staff will participate in a survey to identify butterflies in several habitats for the Butterfly Monitoring Network. No experience necessary. Bring water, snack & insect repellant. Call 321-861-5601.

Purple Martin Workshop– Sunday, 2/20 at 2 pm—Join purple martin landlord Jenny McCoy for a program to learn about purple martins and how you can learn to be a martin landlord too!
